Our work · Freedom of belief

Free to believe.

In many places, choosing a faith, or leaving one, can cost a person their family, their work or their safety. Illumino stands with people who face that cost, and for the freedom of everyone to believe as their conscience leads.

A path of light leading towards the horizon

A freedom for everyone

Freedom of thought, conscience and religion belongs to every person: Christians, people of other faiths, and people of none. It includes the freedom to change one’s religion or belief. It is set out in Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in Article 18 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

“Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”

Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 18

Where that freedom is not protected in practice, people who change their beliefs can face rejection, threats or worse. Some need practical help to rebuild their lives; some simply need to know they are not alone.

How we help

  • Care and support. Listening, pastoral care and friendship for people under pressure because of their beliefs.
  • Practical help. Grants, items and services for people who have lost their home, income or support (see Relief of poverty).
  • Advice and information. Helping people find reliable advice about their situation and their rights.
  • Constructive dialogue. Supporting respectful, informed conversation with communities, faith leaders and lawmakers about protecting people who change their beliefs.

How we work

  • Respectful. We do not campaign against any faith or community. We ask for the same freedom for everyone.
  • Discreet. We never publish names, pictures or stories that could identify the people we help.
  • Peaceful and lawful. We work through dialogue and recognised, lawful means, and never encourage anyone to break the law.
  • Patient. Lasting change in law and in hearts takes time and trust, and we are in it for the long term.

If you need help
